Note: On Sept. 8th, 1830, King William IV was crowned. All the scholars walked in procession down the road as far as Hargreaves Arms, where each one was treated with bread and cheese (each scholar carried a small gill pot), and a gill of home-brewed ale I was six years old at this time, and well do I remember the treat we had that day, for such things were real ‘red-letters” to us. The Hargreaves Arms just mentioned was kept by a publican named William Clegg.
At this time not a building stood along the roadside, but it was meadow-land from Lumb to Water, a distance of 1 1/2 miles, now it is all built on each side of the road. A great deal of hand-loom weaving was carried on in the homes, both cotton and woollen goods. Some of the woollen weavers sized their own warps by the roadside between the two places mentioned. On a fine day it was very common for the warps to be stretched out and someone spreading the size on with a brush from a can. But many of our musical friends were so fond of singing and fiddling that their looms would be idle until about Tuesday night, then they would work night and day to get their allotted work finished before Saturday.
Extract from notes from - Moses Heap - I Moses Heap was born May 8th, 1824, at Doals on the Cliviger Moors, near the rise of the river Irwell, and two miles from Bacup. My parents were married on Thursday May 8th, 1823. We were a numer- ous family, there being eight sons, four of whom died in infancy, I being the eldest. There were also three daughters. When about three months old we removed to Dog Pits a short distance away.; a little later to Weir near the moors, after that to Old Meadows. On July 26th, 1828, we removed to Salisbury, near Lumb.
