Thomas Duffield
Notes
MARRIAGE Marriage Certificate No 254 Bedale 15th June 1844.
He is buried with his wife, Sarah Isabel Dronefield and his daughter Sarah Isabel in Well
Churchyard. The gravestone is still there.
In 1841 Census he was at home with his parents at New St. Well. He was 26 years of age.
In 1851 Census he was at 43 Plasket St. Well with his wife and family of two and his
mother-in-law Jane Dronefield, aged 52. His age was given as 34. i.e. two years short.
In 1861 Census he was shown as an Agricultural Labourer, aged 45. He was at home with his wife
and three children. His Mother-in-Law was still living with them.
There is a St Catherines Marriage Ref. XXN 315/Bedale 1844. He was married in the Parish Church
of Well on 15th June 1844 by Thomas Stubbs, the Vicar of Well. The witnesses
were Sarah Moody, Joseph Duffield, Mary Duffield and Richard Walburn. The last witness did the
same task for his brother James in 1849. I read the name off the certificate as Walbeurn, its
probably the first. I do not know who the Mary Duffield was, his brother Francis had a daughter
Mary, she would have been 7 years of age. It could have been her, though I doubt it. His age
was given as of"Full Age", he was 28 years of age. Joseph Duffield was his brother. His father's
profession was given as a Farmer. Marriage Ref:No 54 Bedale 1844. Day was a Saturday.
Note:Ref: Richard Wabburn and spelling. There was a Francis Walburne living in West Tanfield in
1673. I think that is nearer the correct spelling.
On the marriage certificate of his son Thomas his profession was given as Bailiff, I presume it
was of the estate at Well. The date of the wedding was 8th August 1892 at Middlesbrough.
I seem to have an empathy with my Great Granduncle Thomas, he it seems was the one who cared for
his mother in her later years, also extending that care to his mother in law. He also seems to
have been successful in the allotted field of his life, rising from a farm labourer to the
position of bailiff. If that task is what I think it is, he must have acquired a lot of farming
skills from his father and of course earned the respect of his superiors.
In the 1871 Census he was shown living in Well, with his wife, daughter lsabella and son Thomas.
His profession was given as an agricultural labourer .
St Catherine's Death Ref: Bedale 9D409 1991/4. His age was given as 76.
He was shown in the 1881 Census of Well aged 64, an agricultural labourer.
He was shown in the 1891 census of Well aged 72, together with his wife Sarah and son Thomas.
He was a witness at his wedding, Richard Walburn was shown in the 1881 census, aged 61, a widower
and a farmer of 120 acres living in Witton Le Wear, Durham. He had a son, daughter and gransdson livng with him .He was born in Bedale.
