Marriage of Holmes, George Henry (b. 1864, d. 12 AUG 1939) and Spivey, Rachael (b. 1864, d. 1946)

The original building, by John Clark, consecrated on 7 November 1838, had cost Ł11,000 and was capable of seating 1655 people. There had been burial vaults incorporated in the plan, as at that time there was a chronic shortage of burial space in the town. The vaults and burial ground were closed by Order in Council in 1855. In 1930 Don Robins, an ex-pilot, became vicar. He felt passionately about the plight of the unemployed and opened the crypt to cater for the needy. During the War it was used as an air raid shelter. In the early hours of 12 February 1962 some of the pinnacles round the tower were dislodged and crashed through the roof. The structure had to be made safe and so the tower was altered. The building has recently been up-dated internally, and continues to be the centre of the wonderful charity work started by Don Robins
